York’s independently-run library service has a 15-year contract with the city council – so the authority can’t just decide to cut its budget without consulting them first, library chiefs have said.

And they have repeated a pledge to keep all the city’s fifteen libraries open, despite the council’s financial difficulties. “We do not intend to close any libraries,” a statement released today by Explore York said.

City of York Council has said it wants to reduce its funding for Explore York, which runs the city’s libraries and archive service, by £300,000 a year for the next two years, as part of efforts to plug a £40 million black hole in council finances.
