It means the city will be warmer than Marbella, where temperatures are due to sit between 16C and 19C.
Met Office forecasters expect wall-to-wall sunshine throughout today in York with temperatures peaking at 26C between 2pm and 4pm.
Elsewhere today, Michael Silverstone, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, said temperatures in London could reach 30C – making it the earliest date in May that the UK has seen 30C since records began in 1860.
“We are experiencing a brief very warm or even hot spell, which isn’t abnormal for the time of year,” he said.
Mr Silverstone said it is “unlikely” that the UK will experience a heatwave this week but it “could be close for a few places in the south”.
The Met Office defines a heatwave as a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.

PLANS to reroute a major road in York are set to be discussed at a public meeting in the city.
