A planning application to extend its stay, which is due to end on September 30, says the extension is needed “because relocation to York Central is not deliverable.”
The venture was co-founded in 2018 by young entrepreneurs Tom Leach and Sam McKenzie, based on the site of the former Reynard’s Garage.
The pair created Spark York as a home for start-ups, initially featuring some 20 businesses, mainly in hospitality.
Approval was granted initially on a temporary basis.
However, despite controversy over the site’s appearance through its use of shipping containers and that alternative uses for the 0.1ha site, such as affordable housing or car parking, may generate more revenue or social benefit for City of York Council, the council has extended this use several times.
Now, in its latest application, Spark says its model has “produced significant economic, social, and cultural benefits.”
