However, securing the commitment from the Government was challenging, York and North Yorkshire’s mayor has said.
David Skaith joined Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner on a visit to the museum following his and York Council Leader Cllr Claire Douglas’ warning over the future of its expansion.
The Labour mayor told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) the Government’s previous decision to review the pledge was made amid trying times for national finances.
It comes as Ms Rayner told LDRS the Government recognised the expansion project and the wider York Central development were crucial for economic growth during a visit to the museum.
The deputy prime minister’s visit to York came after Mr Skaith and Cllr Douglas wrote to her warning that the expansion of the museum may not go ahead without the funding.
The £15 million levelling up funding announced under the previous Conservative Government was one of the commitments placed under review by Chancellor Rachel Reeves after Labour’s general election victory.
