Salvation Army shock at number of rough sleepers in one day

"SO that was 15 people – that’s scary that is - that’s the same as the heights of when it was bad."

Those were the words of Charlie Malarkey after being out in York city centre on the morning of December 17 - one of his regular checks on those who are sleeping rough on York’s streets to see if they’re OK.

He was referring to the 15 people he approached in 75 minutes, and Charlie, one of The Salvation Army’s early intervention and prevention team, said at least seven were a new face to him, and six of the people he met were females.
