A PUB that asked punters to swap pints for the pitch is now setting up an official football team after its players won a convincing victory at a charity match.
The Quakerwood Pub in Acomb rallied regulars to form a team for its third annual charity match in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care.
The team’s enthusiasm to support a cause so close to their hearts saw Quakerwood FC squad win 9-0 against a team from YRK Football Group – and raise an incredible £2,300.
Event organiser Bex Stewart is general manager at the pub on Acomb Wood Drive which is part of Flaming Grill, operated by Greene King, whose chosen charity is Macmillan Cancer Care.
She has worked there for almost four years and organised all three of the charity matches. This latest fixture takes the total raised for Macmillan to £7,300.
Bex said: “The support was fantastic even despite the odd shower. I'm really pleased with how the whole day went.
“The result didn't really matter as long as we raised awareness and some great funds for an amazing charity. But ‘Team Quaker’ delivered the win which I'm super happy about too!
