A letter has gone out to parents at Copmanthorpe School about a proposal to close the nursery there from August 31.
The school say that the proposal, made in consultation with City of York Council, is based on declining enrolment and the need to focus resources on strengthening primary education.
They say numbers have steadily decreased over the past three years, making the nursery unsustainable and that other local nurseries and childcare providers have confirmed they can accommodate additional children.
Head teacher, Luke Dancer, said: "Closing the nursery will make a significant saving annually, enabling us to enhance primary education provision.
"We will assist families in transitioning to alternative nursery providers, and signpost future families to other childcare providers.
