York Museums Trust has announced it will receive £1 million in vital funding through the Museums Renewal Fund, supported by Arts Council England (ACE) and the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS).
The funding will help the organisation strengthen its long-term sustainability, enhance activities at York Castle Museum, and invest in the future of its heritage attractions across the city.
This strategic investment will allow the Trust to build greater financial resilience, explore new opportunities for income generation, and continue developing York Castle Museum’s offer for visitors. It forms a key part of York Museums Trust’s wider vision to ensure a sustainable future for its museums, while providing inspiring experiences that connect people with York’s rich cultural heritage.
Established in 2002, York Museums Trust cares for some of the city’s most treasured landmarks and collections, including York Castle Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery, and the Museum Gardens. Together, they welcome around 1.5 million visitors each year and contribute an estimated £18 million to the local economy.
As custodian of the city’s historic collections and heritage estate, the Trust continues to face challenges around long-term investment and income generation. While it receives support from Arts Council England and City of York Council, much of its work relies on ticket sales and other revenue streams to deliver its cultural and educational programmes.
The £1 million investment marks a significant step in securing the Trust’s future, ensuring York’s world-renowned museums can continue to thrive for generations to come.
