'It’s not the end, it’s a renaissance' - York gallery shuts after 12 years

A YORK gallery which celebrates independent and local artists has closed its doors - with plans for a new opening in the summer.

Blossom Street Gallery, next to Micklegate Bar, shut its doors on Sunday (June 22) after 12 years in business

Owner Kim Oldfield, 59, who opened the gallery on her own in 2013, made the decision to close the doors in Blossom Street after her partner became ill last year and the process prompted her to reaccess.

She said: “It’s been a hard decision to make – my partner was ill last year, and I just found myself wanting to spend more time at home. We’ve also got grandkids, and he kept reminding me about the days out that I’d missed out on.

“Ultimately, I had to choose between family and the gallery, and my family won out.”

Blossom Street, which sold a range of art from local makers, was previously the Money Spinners shop with Kim describing renovating the building as feeling like it was ‘coming back to life after a big sleep’.

The shop stocked a variety of work from artists including cards, ceramics, and art pieces – giving local artists a chance to show off their work in a gallery setting.
