CLIMATE activists in York are hoping to build a coalition of opposition to £65 million plans to dual part of York’s outer ring road – and are considering mounting a legal challenge.

• A YORK couple who first met at a scuba diving club party are celebrating 60 years of marriage together today (Thursday, July 31).

  Janet Purt and husband Stan, both 83, who live in Stockton Lane, are celebrating six happy decades together after meeting for the first time at a party thrown for Stan’s scuba diving club in 1963.

  The county’s police say emergency servic e teams have been involved in the recovery of two bodies from beneath the cliff at Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening  (July 30).

• An empty village pub near York which residents are hoping to reopen could be granted protected status.

  A bid to make The Fox Inn, in Stockton on the Forest, an asset of community value (ACV) is set to go before councillors on Tuesday, August 5.

• THE start of something new is underway at a York business at the centre of a protracted row over its signs.

  The Old York Tea Room opened back in February 2023 in one of the oldest buildings in York in Our Lady's Row in Goodramgate.

• A son “did not regret” murdering his father in a North Yorkshire town, a report has said.

  Lukasz Lukasik died by suicide in HMP Hull while awaiting sentence for murdering his father, Jerzy Lukasik, in Selby on December 29, 2020.
