The Advent wreath has been raised at York Minster, marking the beginning of the Christmas season.
Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York, said the raising of the huge wreath and lighting of its candles is a “small way of declaring our hope that the darkness won’t prevail”.
The Minster’s flower arrangers worked throughout Thursday morning (November 27) to put the finishing touches on the wreath before it was raised beneath the cathedral’s Central Tower.
Mandy Barker, the Minster’s head flower arranger, said the teamwork involved in making the wreath mirrored the coming together of people over the festive period.
