Labour MP for York Outer Luke Charters visited StepChange debt charity in Leeds to hear first hand the problems in the industry.
This visit comes after Mr Charters launched a campaign in a recent Westminster Hall debate in parliament around regulating bailiffs.
He secured a debate with Victims Minister Alex Davies-Jones Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Justice.
Mr Charters said the law around bailiffs was last amended more than a decade ago, saying “now is time for change”.
He said: "Currently, the bailiffs sector is unregulated, meaning that oversight is only provided by the voluntary organisation the known as the Enforcement Conduct Board."
In the Westminster Hall Debate held last month Ms Davies-Jones said the Government is working hard to balance the good work that goes on in the sector with a need to protect vulnerable people.
She assured members that the government is actively considering the establishment of a robust independent regulator to ensure accountability and protect vulnerable individuals from such abuses.

York should complete the process of adopting a Ukrainian city as its sibling as the situation in the country rests on a knife-edge, opposition councillors have said.
