A TOP York school where the parents of boarders can pay more than £16,000 a term has received a one star for food hygiene, meaning ‘major improvement necessary’.

Bootham School was founded in 1823 and has 655 pupils on its roll aged from three to 18.

It is highly-regarded, receiving much praise from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) in March this year, and a 92 per cent recommendation rate on Facebook.

However, City of York Council food hygiene inspectors called on March 27 and imposed a one-star rating, calling the food hygiene knowledge of staff ‘inadequate.’

Since then, the school says it has begun training staff amid other measures to remedy the issues and is seeking a re-inspection.

The website of the Food Standards Agency says when it came to hygienic food handling, it was a matter of ‘improvement necessary.’

The cleanliness of the facilities and building, however, was ‘generally satisfactory.’

But for management of food safety, the comment was ‘major improvement necessary.’
