A husband allegedly fired arrows at his wife at close range and repeatedly stabbed her as he tried to kill her in their York home, a jury has heard.

Angus MacDonald, prosecuting, claimed Stephen Carr told his wife Lorna Carr “You are dying tonight” and when she replied “Am I?” he replied “It’s too late, babe, it’s too late".

Mr MacDonald played a recording of the 999 call he alleged Lorna Carr was making to police as Stephen Carr attacked her with a compound bow and a knife.

“This defendant snapped and violently attacked his wife after pursuing her around the family home with a bow and arrow,” alleged the barrister.

“He followed her into their bedroom and stabbed her numerous times in the back with a kitchen knife.”

The barrister also played CCTV recordings made inside the couple’s home in Strensall which the prosecution allege show Stephen Carr fetching the bow, arming himself with it and fitting an arrow to the bow.

Mr MacDonald alleged that the CCTV includes the sound of a bolt from the bow hitting a door that Lorna Carr had just closed after she saw Stephen Carr on the other side with an arrow inserted into the bow.

Stephen Carr, 57, of Southfields Road, Strensall, denies attempting to murder his wife. He has admitted a lesser charge of wounding his wife with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

Mr MacDonald said the single issue before the jury at Leeds Crown Court is whether the husband intended to kill the wife.

Opening the prosecution, Mr MacDonald said the couple argued over the care of the husband’s mother, who was suffering from dementia. Because she lived with them, they had CCTV inside their two-bedroom bungalow.

He also claimed Stephen Carr was a “functioning alcoholic”.
