L’Osteria at 31 Castlegate received a one-star rating, meaning ‘major improvement necessary’ following the inspection of January 22.
The Food Standards Agency website says for hygienic food handling, the venue was ‘generally satisfactory.’ The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building were also ‘generally satisfactory.’
However, for management of food safety, the inspector said ‘major improvement necessary.’
The Press submitted a request to City of York Council for a copy of the inspector’s report under the Freedom of Information Act.
However, the council declined to supply this, in case it affected any future action the local authority may take against the restaurant.
L’Osteria did not respond to repeated requests for comment from The Press.

L’Osteria is a well-regarded restaurant, receiving high ratings on review websites for its food.
TripAdvisor awards the restaurant 4.3 stars out of five, based on 115 reviews, ranking it 228 out of 734 York restaurants.
Google awards it 4.4 stars based on 173 reviews.
