Appeal After Human Remains Found in Burned-Out Vehicle near Malton

North Yorkshire Police, Appeals

North Yorkshire Police have launched an appeal for information after human remains were discovered in a burnt-out vehicle on Marishes Lane, near Malton, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 4am on Monday 16 June, where a vehicle was found ablaze. Following the fire being extinguished, human remains were tragically discovered inside.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, and police have warned that the process may take some time. In the meantime, a family in Ireland is being supported by specially trained officers.

At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detectives are also exploring a possible link to a collision on the A169 Malton Road which occurred a few hours earlier, at around 11.10pm on Sunday 15 June. That incident involved a black Vauxhall Astra and another unidentified vehicle, between the A64 interchange at Malton and Marishes Low Road. Thankfully, the occupants of the Astra were uninjured.

Both Marishes Lane and the affected stretch of the A169 were temporarily closed while police carried out forensic and investigative work. The roads have since reopened.

Officers are now urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or has dash-cam footage from the area between late Sunday evening and early Monday morning to come forward.
