How would you make Acomb Explore even better? Residents invited to have their say!

Acomb Explore, Cllr Darryl Smalley (left) and Cllr Keith Aspden, Leader of City of York Council (far right) meet Fiona Reilly, Acomb Explore Manager.

Residents are being asked to have their say in future improvements to Acomb Explore Library. The community consultation, launched this March, invites residents to share their ideas on what they’d like to see.

Acomb Explore is right in the heart of the community, and already offers a wide range of activities and classes which support residents from across York. We would like residents’ help to make it even better!

What would you like at Acomb Explore? A bigger café? Private study areas? A more flexible space for big events? Something else?

This full consultation offers residents the chance to focus on their top priorities, to help shape the future look and feel of Acomb’s much-loved library. Residents’ views will inform the first draft of improvement proposals for the library. Explore will continue to consult library users and residents as these exciting plans develop.

City of York Council has committed to invest in improving the building and other facilities at Acomb Explore Library, as part of its Future Libraries Investment Programme (FLIP). This programme has seen the new Haxby & Wigginton Library open its doors this January, and a new Library Learning Centre for Clifton was granted planning permission last Autumn.

Councillor Darryl Smalley, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure & Communities at City of York Council, said: “This consultation is the first step in an exciting journey to make Acomb Explore an even more welcoming, accessible and successful Library Learning Centre.

“We’d like as many residents as possible to share their ideas in how we can further improve this valued community space. Please do get involved and have your say!”

“The Council’s proposed investment in Acomb Explore once again demonstrates our clear commitment to supporting, and improving, libraries across York. Our city’s libraries are for everyone, whether socialising, learning, reading or relaxing - they are some of York’s most welcoming community spaces.”

Jenny Layfield, Chief Executive at Explore Libraries, said:

“As an independent mutual society, Explore puts people at the heart of all the services we provide. Consultation and listening are our core values, so that we understand what our communities want and can ensure Explore and its services are shaped by them today and into the future.

“We’re excited to be working with City of York Council to hear from people in Acomb and understand even better what they want from their Explore library at the heart of their community.”

You can take part in the consultation online at https://exploreyork.org.uk/acomb-explore-development/ or through a paper questionnaire collected from Acomb Explore Library. Please hand in your three choices and other comments before Monday 27 March 2023 to any Explore library.
