Handwritten Note From 1978 Discovered in York City Walls

Work on York's historic City Walls is on track to be completed by mid-December.

The conservation work is being carried out by the council’s Ancient Monuments team and in-house stonemasons.

The project involves preserving the lead and timber covering of Bootham Bar’s roof, conserving principal timber structures, and ensuring minimal replacement to protect the historic fabric.

Liam Dennis, Ancient Monuments Manager at City of York Council, said: "The history of the city walls stretches through all the periods of York.

"Being able to care for this heritage and ensure it’s preserved for future generations is just fantastic."

A handwritten note was also found during conservation work on York’s historic City Walls, left 46 years ago by former worker Mick Colley.
